Non-linear load deteriorates the quality of current waveforms at the point of common coupling of various consumers. Active power filter (APFs) is used to mitigate the most concern harmonic pollution in an electrical network. The controller part is the nucleus of an active power filter configuration. Active power filter performance is affected significantly by the selection of current control techniques. The active filter and its current control must have the capability to track sudden slope variations in the current reference to compensate the distorted current drawn by the voltage source inverter. Therefore, the choice and implementation of the current regulator is more important for the achievement of a satisfactory performance level. In this survey, technical reviews of various types of controllers covering a wide range have been presented. This work also reveals the advantages and disadvantages of the practiced control strategies. The effectiveness of the study will help the researchers to choose the proper control methods for various applicationsof active power filter. Aktivni filtar i njegova tehnika upravljanja strujom moraju imati mogućnost pratiti nagle skokove u referentnoj vrijednosti struje kako bi mogli kompenzirati izobličenja struje koju vuče inverter naponskog izvora.

Wind Farm Management using Artificial Intelligent Techniques

    Get PDF
This paper presents a comparative study between genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization methods to determine the optimal proportional–integral (PI) controller parameters for a wind farm management algorithm. This study primarily aims to develop a rapid and stable system by tuning the PI controller, thus providing excellent monitoring for a wind farm system. The wind farm management system supervises the active and reactive power of the wind farm by sending references to each wind generator. This management system ensures that all wind generators achieve their required references. Furthermore, the entire management is included in the normal controlling power set points of the wind farm as designed by a central control system. The performance management of this study is tested through MATLAB/Simulink simulation results for the wind farm based on three doublyfed induction generator

    Get PDF
Rural electrification improves the quality of life of rural dwellers having limited or non-access to electricity through decentralized electricity coverage. Since the price of oil is unstable and fluctuating day by day and grid expansion is not also a cost effective solution, integrating renewable energy sources thus become an important alternative for rural electrification. The present study investigated the feasibility of different power generation configurations comprising solar array, wind turbine and diesel generator in different locations within the geo-political zones of Nigeria. Six rural communities were randomly chosen from each of the six geo-political zones in Nigeria with the intention that the results of the study could be replicated in other remote locations of the selected zones with similar terrains. HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable) simulation software was used to determine the economic feasibility of the systems. The simulations concentrated on the net present costs, cost of energy and renewable fraction of the given hybrid configurations for all the climatic zones. The analysis indicates that the PV/diesel/battery hybrid renewable system configuration is found as optimum architecture for both sensitivity cases of 1.1 and $1.3/l of diesel. It also displayed better performance in fuel consumption and CO2 reductio

Design and implementation of a multi level three-phase inverter with less switches and low qutput voltage distortion

    Get PDF
This paper proposes and describes the design and operational principles of a three-phase three-level nine switch voltage source inverter. The proposed topology consists of three bi-directional switches inserted between the source and the full-bridge power switches of the classical three-phase inverter. As a result, a three-level output voltage waveform and a significant suppression of load harmonics contents are obtained at the inverter output. The harmonics content of the proposed multilevel inverter can be reduced by half compared with two-level inverters. A Fourier analysis of the output waveform is performed and the design is optimized to obtain the minimum total harmonic distortion. The full-bridge power switches of the classical three-phase inverter operate at the line frequency of 50Hz, while the auxiliary circuit switches operate at twice the line frequency. To validate the proposed topology, both simulation and analysis have been performed. In addition, a prototype has been designed, implemented and tested. Selected simulation and experimental results have been provided

This paper reviews different types of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques for solar photovoltaic (PV) application. Since the PV output power is known affected by sun radiation and temperature, it is necessary to search for an effective method for extracting maximum amount of power from PV cell/modules. In this study, a total of seven control algorithms were selected, comprising the most popular methods among the established techniques. A comparison in terms of convergence speed, complexity, as well as the basic concept of each method had been carried out for future reference. Based on the accessible simulation results, modified Perturb and Observe (P&O) method had shown its effectiveness for obtaining actual maximum power point while solving major drawbacks of the conventional P&O. This paper also discusses typical solar MPPT system, including the pros and cons of each part of the system

Predictive Current Control for Three-Level Four-Leg Indirect Matrix Converter under Unbalanced Input Voltage

    Get PDF
In this paper, a robustness evaluation of model predictive current control with instantaneous reactive power minimization for a three-level four-leg indirect matrix converter is presented. Unbalanced voltages can be extremely dangerous, especially for motors and other inductive equipment. Unbalanced voltages can have a detrimental effect on equipment and the power system, which is exacerbated by the fact that a small phase voltage imbalance can result in a disproportionately large phase current imbalance. The robustness test is carried out by considering balance and unbalanced input voltages. The proposed control predicts the behavior of the load current and the instantaneous reactive power for every possible 96 switching states. Subsequently, it selects the optimum switching state which fulfils the objectives of the control without the need of modulators. The cost function has been adequately modified to consider the asymmetrical aspect of the input voltage. Experimental validation using a laboratory prototype was conducted by using FPGA under a wide range of input voltage unbalance. The experimental results show high fidelity load current reference tracking while maintaining relatively low instantaneous reactive power during the transient and steady-state condition. The percentage of reactive power after setting the optimal weighting factor, the average reactive power was found to reduce to approximately 10- 20%

A multilevel multistage inverter design and its corresponding control strategy are presented. The hybrid inverter has a high voltage stage composed of the six-switch conventional three phase inverter with its outputs connected in series to the outputs of three-level H-bridge medium and low voltage stages. The voltage ratio has been selected to form 18-level provide maximum number of uniform steps. The suggested control strategy has been developed to ensure minimum switching losses focusing on holding the higher voltage stage state as long as it is feasible. The reference voltage vector has been approximated to the nearest inverter voltage vector. A special definition of state zone has been introduced for the low voltage stage to enable the achievement of the reference vector with minimum error. The proposed control strategy has been tested and its short computational time and low memory requirement has been proven
